One time I have something to do in Newark. At Rutgers College
I pick up Alexander and one of his doctorate candidates, who just
defended his dissertation at the Institute for Global Change and
Governance. That must be celebrated. We go to the Portuguese district
behind the train station and seat ourselves between the men at the
bar. I order a Chorizo. The Chorizo was flamed spectacularly. Everyone
is satisfied that I, as the guest, got the most glamorous dish.
The discussion touches on European Anti-Americanism. He thought
that was thoroughly ridiculous, said Alexander, that the Europeans
are suddenly are acting like a bunch of laid-back liberal coffee
drinkers.
As we leave, the Portuguese men stay seated for a long time.
